This is the overarching research question tying together the contributions to this volume carefully edited by Andrei V. Belyi and Kim Talus. In addressing this question, the editors explain in the introductory chapter that the aim of this book is to illuminate the multi-faceted interaction between the state and the market in the hydrocarbon sectors, which the authors claim to be ‘not linked in a linear fashion to the structural issues of reserve distribution or supply and demand levels’ (p 1).The first part of the volume is dedicated to the analysis of cross-border and transnational issues within the hydrocarbon sectors.
