Abstract

The austerity of life in post-occupation Japan takes center stage in this film about a mother's struggle to provide for her children. Haruko was widowed by the war, and after losing the family land to an abusive brother-in-law, she has kept her family fed by selling black market goods and working as a prostitute in the pleasure quarters.
