Abstract

"Human Humanities offers an accessible introduction to the humanities as a diverse but coherent domain of scholarship. Willem Drees here explores how the disciplines included within the humanities aim to offer insight into the self-understanding and self-expression of others and oneself. As this is done by humans and about humans, humanities scholarship is more self-involving than the sciences. Drawing on models in the fields of theology and religious studies, where personal engagement and academic distance sometimes clash, Drees also shows how his definition of the humanities clarifies their challenging character, public relevance, and intrinsic human value. Drees demonstrates how to think more clearly, and with greater coherence, about the humanities.
