Abstract

This volume is one of the few English books on a potential "New Cold War" between China and the United States that has intensified amid the pandemic. In addition to bringing together high-quality research articles, this book contains three unique and important features. First, all the authors have studied and taught in both China and america for decades: Not only have they possessed rich knowledge and understanding of both countries, but they have also referenced enormous Chinese and English sources in their writings. Second, unlike political observers who tend to focus on the current Sino-American developments, the historians in this book delve into the ongoing Sino-American conflict and "great-power competition" through historical perspectives harking back to the late 19th century. Finally, most authors have paid special attention to the "human factors" of political leaders in both countries that have invariably played instrumental roles in the centuries-long Sino-American relations. With these three striking features, this book allows readers to have a novel and profound comprehension of the historical, diplomatic, personal, and racial facets of a "New Cold War" between the two superpowers.
