Abstract:Namm?ḻv?r is perhaps best known to most audiences through A.K. Ramanujan's translation of selections from his monumental poem Tiruv?ymoḻi, published in Hymns for the Drowning (1981). The compendium of writings attributed to the Tamil Vaiṣṇava bhakti saints (?ḻv?rs), the N?l?yira Tivviyap Pirpantam (The Divine Collection of Four Thousand), contains a total of four poems attributed to the poet known variously as Namm?ḻv?r, Caṭakōpaṉ, or M?ṟaṉ. These are the Tiruv?ymoḻi, the longest and perhaps most well known and highly regarded among the poems, the Tiruviruttam, the Tiruv?ciriyam, and the Periya Tiruvant?ti. Within the Śrīvaiṣṇava theological context, these four poems are identified with the four Vedic saṃhit?s, with the Tiruviruttam and the Tiruv?ymoḻi representing the Ṛk and S?ma texts. The coupling of the Tiruviruttam and the Tiruv?ymoḻi as texts that hold pride of place extends well beyond this powerful allegoric identification. Indeed, one could argue that it is near impossible to understand the massive thousand verse Tiruv?ymoḻi - in all its exegetical and theological fullness - without reference to the Tiruviruttam, which until now, has remained rather inaccessible to the scholarly world.
