Abstract

This book is the first publication that deals with textiles and their various forms in art. Why it had to take until 2023 for such a publication to be available has to do with the ambivalent status of the material and the techniques: cotton or nylon as well as weaving and embroidery have always been part of the arts and crafts and viewed as rather inferior by the visual arts. In the meantime, the art world has become so differentiated and globalized that textiles are frequently encountered in art internationally and this is hardly questioned anymore. This publication promises to provide a broad regional, national and global perspective on the diversity of textile manifestations. Using 18 carefully selected artists, richly illustrated and with new interviews with producers from Switzerland, the USA and the Congo, we get to know an extremely original but still little-known field of art
