Abstract

"'Jharkhand', means the land of forests and is the only state in India, which was created after a long-standing movement for the self-determination of indigenous subaltern groups from the region. Yet, Jharkhand's sovereignty, both in terms of self-government for indigenous communities, and in terms of the social contract between marginalised citizens and the different scales of government responsible for their welfare remain contested. Throughout Jharkhand's long and chequered history of regional self-determination, indigenous tribes known as adivasis worked together with marginalised social groups (Schedule Castes, Other Backward Classes) who self-identify as moolvasis to assert their shared identity and their collective rights to the region's land, forests and water"--
