Abstract

"Books 6 to 10 provide Augustine's arguments against those who think that many gods should be worshipped, not for benefits in this life (the subject of Books 1-5), but for the sake of life after death. In Book 1 he expected this task to be more demanding, because he would have to engage with outstanding philosophers who shared many beliefs with Christians, on the immortality of the soul, that the true God had made the universe, and on the providence with which he governs all that he made; but Augustine would affirm the city of God, true piety, and the worship of God in which alone everlasting blessedness is truthfully promised (Book 1.36, p.34.13-27)"--
