Abstract:"Badiou's lectures on oneness, held in 1983 and 1984, were the first he gave. They focused on Descartes, Plato, and Kant, the start of a five-year cycle in which Badiou reviewed the history of philosophy from Parmenides to Heidegger. The concept of oneness plays a significant role in his major work Being and Event, as does the radical thesis that the subject is always the object of philosophy, also first introduced in these lectures. The idea of the one is important for Badiou as it is in a sense the foil for his signature metaphysical concept, the multiple, which references the disjunctive, multiple, nonunitary nature of reality: being consists of the set of cohesive, comprehensible entities, or individuated "ones." Through an analysis of the role played by the one in the history of western philosophy, illustrated in the writings of Plato, Descartes, and Kant, Badiou identifies its totalizing effects and the problems they create for a democratic politics"--
