Abstract: | Business corporations are political entities and need to be considered as such. 'Seeing Like a Firm' invites readers to do just that by providing a political theory of the business firm and, in doing so, offering new perspectives on the recent history of social justice, neoliberalism, and conservatism. |
| "If one of the tasks of political philosophy, to use Foucault's beautiful expression, is to try to produce a "critical ontology of ourselves", then this book offers a surprisingly radical proposal. It is an invitation to change our theoretical lens when we try to provide answers to the following Foucauldian questions: What is our present? What is this "now" that is ours today? How can we provide a critical ontology of the present? Here, let's take a moment to think of a few critical questions about our present that should concern us, especially in the economic realm. How should we think about the contemporary obsession with the corporation, and its centrality in our social imaginaries? How should we response to its rise to power as maybe the central institution of our time? How can we make sense of the exaltation of management and entrepreneurship? About the extraordinary rise in power of business schools? How should we account for the fact that an incredible amount of people accepts to be literally under the tutelage of corporations and brands? How should we think about the praise of competition at all costs, which goes through both the obsession with the entrepreneurial life and the cult of management gurus and life coaches of all kinds, who are supposed to show us how to be amongst the "winners" with the better versions of ourselves? Why are workers supposed to suffer the corporate government of a class of executives, managers and consultants that are at the top of the world while apparently being unable to think otherwise than with banal guidelines for success, buzzwords"-- |
