Abstract

"The introduction provides background for the book, including definitions of terms (such as arrangement, transcription, re-composition, and adaptation), methodologies, and an overview of the scope and chapter content. In addition, it discusses the structure and style of the Goldberg Variations. In the process, it shows that stylistic plurality has contributed to the proliferation of interest in the piece across the wide variety of genres and media discussed in this book. It shows that Bach's blending of a newer cantabile style and harmonic-contrapuntal elaboration with Italian virtuosity and French dance has invited a multiplicity of interpretations and widespread adaptation in a variety of contexts"--
