Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis are the most frequently encountered skin diseases and may be challenging to diagnose precisely, especially in certain body locations like the hands.1 Psoriasis can be eczematized and eczema may resemble psoriasis.2 Reliable methods to distinguish both diseases and to monitor treatment success, as well as the disease course and long-term control, are still lacking. Biomarkers have been researched increasingly over the last few years and are on the rise to fill these gaps. ‘Biomarker’ is an umbrella term for describing a normal biologic process, pathogenic process or pharmacological response to a therapeutic intervention (predictive biomarkers). It has been recognized that biomarkers will be involved in clinical trials for chronic skin diseases.
