Abstract

"Social Change: Movements, Politics, and Technology is a text-reader that examines social change processes in the United States in global and historical context. It is distinctive among social change texts because it examines competing strategies of social change, connecting experiences of social movement leaders and participants with larger political-economic processes. Each chapter spotlights a field of historical conflict that generated epoch-making social changes, and the actors who sought and resisted change: settlers, plantation owners, factory and mine owners, bankers and hedge fund managers, indigenous people, abolitionists, people of color, the employed and unemployed, homeless people, youth, welfare mothers, LGBTQIA activists, feminists, and people with disabilities, intellectuals, philanthropists, religious leaders, etc. At the end of each chapter, the author will recommend two primary source documents for further study that provide narrative accounts of social movements that served as significant change agents."
