Abstract

Authors present eight ancient gold coins from the collection of National Museum of Banat from Timişoara. Five of them - one daric from the middle of the 4th c. BC, one autonomous Lampsacus stater minted around 370 BC (extremely rare) and three Alexander the Great type staters struck at Amphipolis (325-319 BC), Babylon (Seleucos I, 311-300 BC) and Miletus (300-295 BC) came from the communist Militia, confiscating in 1982 the coins (together with other 14 gold Roman and Medieval samples) in the duane from Stamora-Moraviţa. There are also other three Alexander type staters coming from the commerce; one came from Antiquarian Mautner László from Budapest (exchange), a second one was bought in 1943 by the museum from the collection belonging to dr. Arthur Traunfellner from Lugoj and the third one was bought in 1975. O bserving t he presence together of two rare and unusual coins for the region (one Persian daric and one autonomous stater from Lampsacus) we insist on the three Alexander type staters from Amphipolis, Babylon and Miletus, having a closing date around 300 BC and suggesting a possible connection with a mercenary serving in one of the Hellenistic armies involved in the battle of Ipsus in 301 BC.
