Abstract:Documents Hauser's role, together with his friends Felix Mendelssohn and M. Hauptmann, in reviving interest in Bach's music in the 19th c. and in founding the Bach-Gesellschaft. As an opera singer, Hauser was engaged in numerous cities. In each place he met admirers of Bach and encouraged the interest of his friends in the composer. At the same time he collected Bach MSS and completed a thematic catalogue of his works. A study of the catalogue permits identification of a number of composers of works falsely attributed to Bach. The diverse collection is reconstructed and viewed systematically for the first time, chiefly in regard to provenance and identity of scribes. An appendix details as far as possible the present owner, the scribe, the period and place of origin, and the provenance of each MS.
