Abstract

The town of Başçiftlik was a village in the Niksar district of the Sivas province during the Ottoman period. It became a township consisting of 8 villages in the Niksar district of the Tokat sanjak in the Sivas province in 1880. In 1908, its township status was abolished and it was connected to the Iskefsir (Reşadiye) district. It was taken from Reşadiye in May 1951 and included in Niksar District. Başçiftlik, which became an independent district in 1992, today consists of a center, 2 towns and 8 villages. This book looks at Başçiftlik during the Ottoman period. Başçiftlik was located on the Niksar-İskefsir section on the left branch route of the northern road passing through Anatolia and going to Georgia and Iran. The state established a military base there. The lodge built by Sinan Bey in the village in 1485 became a resting and accommodation place for travelers. The town's estimated population was around 265 in 1514, 385 in 1574 and 436 in 1844. When it was a village, it was governed by kethüda and headmen, and when it was a township, it was administered by principals. Until 1840, timar-owned sipahis provided the security of the village. Başçiftlik always provided military support to the Ottoman military units. The economy of its people was generally based on agriculture and animal husbandry
