| Abstract: | Deals with (1) the research situation, (2) general historical and terminological aspects of the stile antico, (3) the authentic prerequisites for Bach's relationship to the tradition of the Palestrina style (incorporates new material), (4) characteristics of the stile antico and the ways in which it appears in Bach's compositions, (5) the significance of the stile antico for Bach's art, and (6) problems of chronology and questions of the position of the stile antico within the compass of Bach's late works. The appendix contains a discussion concerning copies of Latin figural music by other composers in Bach's music library (with a catalogue and musical examples) and liturgical cantus firmi in Bach's church music (with an inventory). |
